Using technology in the classroom

What technology do you use in the classroom, and how do you get the best out of it? What are your teaching tips for using technology for language learning? Do you have any app or software recommendations? Do you allow students do bring in their own devices, or use technology provided by the school?

We'd love to hear your thoughts!

Re: Using technology in the classroom

I use technology in different ways and for different purposes. First and foremost, I use it in class during my instruction. For lesson delivery, I use PowerPoint presentations which I find quite engaging to both my visual and kinesthetic learners. I also use authentic images sourced from Google images or elsewhere from the internet to enhance my teaching. I like to use you-tube videos or music related to the theme that I would be teaching to introduce the lesson or as a warmer or to reiterate certain teaching points in my lesson I follow up my teaching with homework assignments which I post in Blackboard. This keeps students on their toes because it makes them visit the portal to find reading articles, videos, projects and homework assignments etc. In addition, I have discussions in Blackboard where students can reply to other students’ responses or ask for clarification or just challenge some arguments from other students which might seem unfounded. I find the internet a priceless source of resources for my teaching. I get a lot of readily available information for free. For class presentations, I ask my students to use technology as well; the most common way is usually PowerPoint presentations or video diaries. The text book that I am using at the moment (Q-Skills for life) has an online practice portal to supplement what I have taught in class. Students use it to practice and to track their progress. It comes in handy when it’s time to revise for weekly quizzes and other exam items. As you can see, I use an array of technology in my teaching for instructional purposes, follow-up and also to encourage my students to use it for learning independently.

Hi! I use the smart board as the course books come with excellent activities for it. I found it great to get students to stand up and participate. It works marvels with kids. Regarding my handset, it is the best player for one-to-one tuition. I have also a tablet PC to show videos and practise by using apps and games. I have encouraged my teen students to assist me in class by searching info or playing songs with their blackberries. What I cannot stand are those who plug in their headphones and try to trick me hehe Do you have any advise on how to deal with them? Another question is: Should Education give up on handwriting? Because we can hardly write nowadays. Homework and tests become more and more computer dependent! Thanks for your insight!

I use an interactive whiteboard to support all stages of my lessons. To start with, I use books that come with an excellent IWB software for the lesson presentation and initial practice stage. Then I supplement this with games on the IWB, which I make myself by exploiting triggers and animation in powerpoint. Finally I use the internet to link to sites with information or activities that relate to the course materials. I love using technology in the classroom. It reduces discipline issues to a minimum, children become absorbed and truly involved in the process of the lesson and they learn a lot in class, making it easier for them to do their homework.

Re: Using technology in the classroom

Technology makes students feel English is a tool for their lives. The most of my teenagers love to surf the Internet to find information. It is really simple, but I give them a new word, or a concept, and they try to prepare some slides to explain the others what they have learned. I am happy to say we are all learning about Lovelock and his Theory of Gaia, about cat behaviour...

Her in Argentina we have a program called "Connectar Igualdad" which provides secondary school students with netbooks for free for them to use for educational purposes at school which they can take home to do their homework. I have been using most of its resources already, such as asking learners to produce videos doing a speaking task or asking them to use a colaborative application such as the documents and powerpoint web apps from google.docs or microsoft skydrive. Actually, I've got two proyects running with google docs at the moment. I also work with e-portfolios and students seem very interested in these sorts of self-evaluation methods. besides they have a wider audience to see what they create since most of their productions are recycled and used for other students to see what to do. What is most interesting is that I have become a more active creator of learning materials since I work producing videos that I upload on U Tube, presentations made in Prezzi, Slideshare or interactive activities I create through Edilim and Hot potatoes. We upload all those in the schools servers and we can reuse and make changes on the spot. I frankly believe Information technologies have come to stay and therefore, we should take advantage of it.
