What should we be teaching: British, American or International English?

Ian McMaster's article on teaching different types of English is now available in the Cambridge English Teacher resources area. Do you think that interpersonal skills are more important than varieties of language? Or do you insist on native-speaker accuracy in your classes? We'd like to hear your thoughts!

In Thailand, and I suspect the entire world, non-native speakers will be exposed to a plethora of accents and styles/types of English. They will need to understand anything that is thrown at them, so we serve them better by teaching American, British, International, and any other type of English. Obviously a Canadian will find it more natural and easier to teach Americanized English...as will a teacher from England teach the British form of English. Students are lucky if they are exposed to multiple accents and forms. As a side note, I believe a truly international form of English is inevitable in the not too distant future. I envision it to be more streamlined with less troublesome clutter and exceptions; probably molded on the speech patterns of speakers of English as a second language. And, at some point, the tables will be turned and the native English speaker will need to learn the nuisances of International English to compete in the Global Village...unless Esperanto makes a come back of course :)

The interpersonal skills are unarguably vital when teaching a language. The more communicative you are with the student, the lower the affective filter is. When teaching if the teacher is not capable of establishing a good relationship, the learning doesnt really take place so it actually doesn't really matter which accent he/she uses. Also there's also Australian accent. If our first aim is to teach Englsh, the main focus should be on interpersonal skills.

I believe the best is to show students the way to distinguish pronunciations. here in Spain students watch a lot of American series and then end up mixing pronunciations. I usually give them an example: imagine when you start the sentence your accent is the one in Andalusia and when you finish the accent has turned to be the one in Galicia (North West coast of Spain).

Hi, I work at private school in Moscow and I teach British English. But sometimes my students ask me how to say something not only in British English, but in American English, too, because I take into account the fact that American English is also very popular, some students watch movies and listen to the music, go to the USA and even have relatives who live there. And they want to know special vocabulary. Some students ask me sometimes about the words that they heard in a song, a movie etc.
